A Gentle Touch

Apparently some people like the rough approach. That might work for some, however …

So I am in the process of learning to drive. It’s not a long story, but it’s not here for this blog entry.

One of the things that I am learning as far as clutch control and braking is concerned is that sometimes a gentle touch is what is required.

Indeed as I reflected on that I discovered that actually there are times when actually the gentle touch works wonders. Sure a kick up the backside might get it out of your system, but sometimes all it does is leave a mark on the backside and a bruised ego unprepared for the real repentance work needed.

Tragically there are some cultures who know very little of the merits of the gentle touch. The way has always been to be up front and brutally straightforward about issues. The thinking has been that it’s a test of character to be able to take it straight and if they crumble it shows how weak they are.

That approach, however, seems to betray an inconsiderate and insensitive understanding of the complexity of humanity. Nurturing anything requires the right mix of both the clinical and the gentle. Some people will be grateful for a grace approach that is not about aggressively imposing, but meekly pointing out. It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a respect for the heart of the other to turn out of goodness than out of the more harsh realities that can occur.

I trust that by the wisdom of God you will accept the gentle touch God often offers to bring you into the right path. Likewise I trust you will have the wisdom of God to understand where that gentle touch can make all the difference in the lives of those around you.

Gently does it.

For His Name’s Sake
