Cross or Crown

As a follower of Jesus what do you live for, the cross or the crown?

It’s a question that occurred to me this evening. The symbol of the cross is a prominent one in the faith. Paul mentions the cross on a number of occasions in his letters and Peter mentions it once in his. There is no doubt the cross is important to our understanding of who Jesus is and what He came to do for us.

Jesus Himself tells us to carry the cross to be worthy of being His follower.

The first image then that is often presented and followers often share with outsiders is that of the cross.

Was the cross however the goal or the means to the goal? Is the crucified Christ the image that is supposed to spur us on to following Him? Is that the aim? Or is the cross the method by which we get to what God has called us towards?

Getting hung up on the cross, if you’ll excuse the pun, is not getting the whole point of the cross is it? Jesus was able to endure the cross for what was beyond it.

What is beyond the cross for you?

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
