Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” (Acts 3:6)
The interesting thing about money and the pursuit of it is that it’s not really about the money. It’s always about what the money will get or what having the money represents. That’s why in this day and age people are content with the thought that they are worth a certain set of numbers and have a set of numbers in their savings.
Followers of Jesus, however, are far richer than any amount of numbers that a cash register or bank account could outline. The episode of the man who was lame from birth in Acts chapter 3 is an example of those riches. Here is the man expecting money and after an encounter Jesus through those who believe, he receives something far greater.
Notice, however, how this is a demonstration and then opportunity for the followers of Jesus to actually share the source of all riches. Peter gives the audience what he was given – he gives a chance to believe in the One who heals. He gives a chance to embrace the One who can wipe out sins. He gives a chance to turn to the One who can turn us from our wicked ways.
Faith in Jesus Christ allows us to receive immense heavenly riches here on earth. Riches that far exceed anything we can get from having money or whatever money can buy.
Once we receive these riches, however, the point of following Jesus is to give these riches to those who need it. Just as those who are poor in Spirit gain the heavenly kingdom, so those who have been enriched give what they have to others.
