The Word In John: 20 – So That You Will Believe

Christianity is not about a system of how to be good.

But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:31)

The gospel of John evidently could have been written with other material and other stories, but the entire structure of the narrative – the acts, the signs, the dialogue, the final conversation, the betrayal, the trial, the death and the resurrection – is to get readers to believe.

Jesus made a number of claims about who He was. The most outrageous to His listeners that threatened to get Him stoned and eventually got Him killed is the very claim that saw Him rise victoriously from the dead. He is the Son of God – Saviour and King.

Victory over death proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that faith in Jesus Christ is not faith in Him being a good man, a good teacher, a good speaker or a man who did good things. That gets nowhere near recognising Him for who He said He was – and who He is.

When He returned to His followers Jesus said that as He was sent, so He was sending. We who believe in Him are also sent to share this good news that peace is with us because He has risen from the grave and He is Lord.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
