The Word In John: 19 – The King Crucified, The Job Finished

It used to be with a very heavy heart that I used to read this chapter. Of late, however, I read it with intrigue.

In chapter 1 when Nathaniel received proof of the claims of Jesus, he reverently acknowledged Him as the King of Israel. In this chapter Pilate recognises more about the status of the one brought before him than those who want Him killed.

Indeed it’s tragic seeing the Roman governor go in and out to Jesus wanting to release Him, but protecting his own interests. That level of indecision deciding what to do with what you know still challenges believers today.

Here He is, the King whose life mission ushered in truth and grace, mercy and justice, peace and righteousness. Here is the King who indisputably proved by His acts as well as His words to be the Son of God. For all His works for all the good, for all the signs, for all the teacher, here He is. Crucified.

And what are His last words before breathing His last?

When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (John 19:30)

The King shows us the way to die. Whatever age is reached, there can be a sense of unfinished business, a life of regrets, unreleased potential, so much that could be done. Jesus on the cross at the point of death knows He has accomplished the mission He was given.

It’s reassuring to follow someone who finishes what they start. It’s reassuring to know that at the darkest hour even at the time of greatest grief, those last words are not words of weakness and defeat. They are the words of triumph.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
