The Word In John: 9 – If You See What He Means

Chapter 9 is one of my favourite episodes in scripture.

I absolutely love how the man who was born blind stands up to the religious rulers of the day.

A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.” He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” (John 9:24, 25)

It was undeniable when a man born blind sees. It was undeniable when even his parents could corroborate the fact that he was the man born blind. It was undeniable when the man himself was not in any doubt about how his life had been miraculously transformed.

I compare his response to the man at Bethesda pool who was lame and when he was healed was condemned for carrying his mat on the Sabbath. Jesus warned that fella to stop the sinning. When Jesus comes across the dude born blind, he offers him something better than being accepted by the religious ruler of the day. It was offered to one who recognises he was blind and was grateful of the chance to see.

Jesus reminds us that it’s not those who are blind who have the problem – it’s those who think they can see anyway who really have the problems. And will continue to have that problem until they see just how bad they cannot see – if you see what He means.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
