This is the Messiah.
No, he’s not the Messiah because he doesn’t tick this box.
How can he do all these things and not be the Messiah?
How can he come from there and be the Messiah?
I believe you are the Messiah and I will follow you!
I believe you are not the Messiah and will look for ways to eliminate you!
What we can say about Jesus is that He never left people with a ‘ho-hum’ response. People did not react to Him in a passive manner. His acts, His words, His signs, His engagement with the Jewish leaders, His engagement with His disciples – all these provoked a certain response. Certain rejection, certain acceptance, certain confusion and certain intrigue.
Presenting Jesus to others and reflecting His rule in our lives evokes similar responses. What we offer people, however, is something enriching that demands a response even as Jesus invited His listeners.
“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:37, 38)
