The Word In John: 4 – Food And Drink To Jesus

Reading about what it is to follow Jesus is so fascinating.

The majority of the fourth chapter in John revolves around Jesus and two of my favourite subjects – food and drink.

When I think about food and drink, I think about the most fundamental and basic ingredients that help me live. No food or drink and I become weak and incapable of being all I can be. When fed and watered I can crack on with what I am supposed to do.

The disciples nip off to get something to eat for the Master and by the time they return Jesus  says He’s already eaten!

“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” (John 4:34)

The work that Jesus refers to is engaging with people and sharing the good news that the Messiah they have been waiting for has arrived. The good news has come to even those outside the ‘accepted’ social groups.

I love that about Jesus – His good news is about engaging with people and witnessing changed lives through sharing His identity with others. Breaking down barriers, allowing those who are marginalised to be embraced by this good news. It’s also interesting that those on the fringes see Him for who He is, whereas those who should know Him, miss out on His identity.

Like the woman at the well, we today have the chance to drink from the well that will never run dry. We get to drink and never need for drink ever again.

As we eat and drink, we’re also invited to join Jesus in finding our food and drink in doing what God calls us to do.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
