The third chapter in the gospel according to John has a famous verse in it that for many captures the heart of what the gospel is.
The episode it relates to, however, is fascinating for how Jesus addresses a teacher of Israel. This chapter highlights the importance of faith in Jesus Christ and His mission and the rebirth process necessary to enter a new rule marked by eternal life.
Jesus and faith in Him is the essential entry requirement for eternity.
He must become greater; I must become less. (John 3:30)
Note how John D. Baptist acknowledges that Jesus must increase. That takes great humility, to know your role is complete when the focus goes to the King of the Kingdom . Faith in Jesus also acknowledges that life is lived when He increases in prominence in our lives and any selfish or self-seeking emphasis decreases.
Oh that today the life-giving experience of rebirth by the Spirit would allow people to accept and believe, repent and receive the role of Jesus as King and His increase leads to our decrease.
For His Name’s Sake
Shalom
