I am not one of the world’s most social people.
This has not been an impediment to me seeing how people engage with new people in many different settings. I am glad I have been able to do that with people who know what they’re doing. So far here are some pointers I’ve got from experts.
1. Learn the language of the particular group – that’s not about dialect it’s about learning why people say the things they do.
2. Spend time engaging in activities they enjoy
3. Get a gift
4. Be available for them even when it’s inconvenient
5. Every once in a while send them a text with a real funny joke.
6. Look out for ways in which they can help you
7. Acknowledge the fact that not everyone is wanting to be healed
8. Discover fresh and different ways to make mistakes and learn from them
9. Never forget the lessons learnt from others who have gone before you.
10. Never forget there are new lessons to leave for others to learn by in forging innovative ways of engaging.
