True story. I never saw myself being a Dad at all. I barely saw myself as a married man and children never entered my thinking beyond a nominal acknowledgement that as part of the rites of passage I would need to contribute to children entering the world.
It won’t be long until my first born will be ten years old. It’s a case of accepting the fact that there are at least three humans on the planet who see me as Daddy. It’s a blessing and a privilege. Here are ten reasons for that. In no particular order.
1. Being Dad nudges me further towards selfless living.
2. Being Dad helps me appreciate even more the great job my parents and other good parents do.
3. My children remind me that life is about fun and play.
4. My children remind me it’s possible to live in a way where you can let go of grudges and just love people.
5. Being Dad stimulates my capacity to be a decent, responsible contributor to a loving community.
6. My children give me such joy and happiness I often have to remind myself that God gave them to me for my responsibility not just doting on them.
7. My children remind me that relationships are about understanding, care and nurture. Not control, domination and a rule by fear.
8. Being Dad gives me a legitimate reason to treat myself – doing so whilst conveniently also treating my children.
9. Being Dad gives me a greater appreciation for why children need loving parents.
10. My children are some reflection of me and my fatherhood points me to the example set by our heavenly Father.
