Solid September Signing: Progressive Mentality In A Regressive World

It is really tragic.

Enslaved to the dominant super power of the day, oppressed and suppressed by the needs of this juggernaut of a civilisation there appears no way out. For years you and your people have sought freedom, but it’s looking further away with each passing day. You have cried out for freedom but seemingly with no response.

In this God performs the miraculous. Ten plagues afflict the super power crippling its economy and subjecting the people to a terror that forces the hand of the ruler to release the people not just on their terms and conditions, but with added financial inducements from the super power. Just when the military had second thoughts, God enacts a supreme act of deliverance through water on dry land before wiping out the military might of the super power.

What great salvation. What awesome acts of deliverance. What an indisputable indication of care and love. What a mighty God.

Yet despite that only two people of that entire generation would inherit the promised land. How sad is that?

The story informs us because of unbelief the people missed out. They considered the circumstances to be greater than their Deliverer. They wanted to hark back to Egypt rather than progress to the promise.

That’s tragic.

It would be even more tragic if we who have witnessed Jesus rescuing us from death and receiving everlasting, abundant life will prefer to hark back to what we know. It would be even more tragic to be recipients of His deliverance from sin and seek to stay where we are seeing our circumstances as greater than the Lamb of God who has all authority in heaven and earth.

Looking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith we are to press on. We are to progress to the promise. We are to do so because we know He who called us is true.

At times I witness some gatherings that are museum pieces in celebration of what God did decades ago. There is little in the way of growth. There is little in the way of progress.

I look to be part of a people that are progressive, so I would not be stuck on what was but be consumed by what Jesus Christ is doing in the world today.

For His Name’s Sake
Shalom
