I like history as it happens.
The bit I like, obviously, is the story. I love a good story and the past has plenty to keep me going. So many tales of the good, bad and ugly.
My own past is littered with all the above. Especially the ugly.
A friend outlined to me recently that there’s a difference between what explains me and what defines me. When I allow Jesus Christ to define me, it makes a difference to my present. It makes a difference to my approach to any situation. There is something about being defined by Jesus Christ that is immensely liberating. It doesn’t negate the consequences of previous actions, but it says the present perspective is determined by a far greater being.
This is particularly useful if on previous occasions it has been the past that has done the defining. Especially that ugly past. Others are prone to bring that into play to suggest behaviours are to be expected because you’re always like that. With enough influence from within and without it is easy to live up to that.
It’s a serious challenge to constantly trust in the One who defines you. To walk in the truth of that realising whatever issue or circumstances affect you, it is not what you have done before that determines what you do in the present. He is able to work in and through you in this situation.
That relieves you of any baggage from the past. It reassures you that right now, faith and trust in Him is all that matters.
