There is something about the creative process that is thrilling to a huge degree.
Listening to a song or a piece of music; watching a dance or a moving drama; reading a gripping novel or a soothing poem. It appeals to far more than the logical. It hits us in the eyes, the head, the heart and the gut.
It’s why I am a firm believer that we continue by the power of the story we pass on. Whether it’s a religion, an ethnic or tribal group, a scientific method, a sports team, whatever, it is maintained by the story.
We wonder why values appear to fade and the young don’t appear to follow the way of the old. Part of that could be the allure of a better narrative. Part of it could be the failure to establish the bridge where travel can take place from the chapter of yesterday to today’s new episode.
Despite those concerns there are stories that pass the test of time. Despite efforts to silence and denounce them, some stories persist and indeed burn with new vigour because the light in them refuses to be snuffed out by scepticism and cynicism.
Purpose, meaning and hope drives us on as we discover and rediscover our place in the greater story of life. That’s why it’s good to remind yourself of the good story in which you find yourself.
As you recall it, you will delight again in the reality that a good story goes a very long way.
