Groups: A Whole Greater Than An Individual

When I look at what worked really well over the brief course of my life, I find a lot of it is down to the power of group work.

There is something brilliant about three or more people gathering and committing to work together on a joint cause. I get the impression church is meant to be that from time to time, but that doesn’t always work out.

Partnerships are great, but when groups work together it is awesome. The diversity, integration, complimentary interactions and combined output really makes it true that such joint work can see the whole being far greater than the sum of its parts.

There was a work team I was a part of a few years ago that exemplified it to a tee. There were four of us in the team. We started around the same time in really challenging circumstances. Yet in short time we developed a great rapport, respect for each other’s evident skill and ability and a commitment to deliver quality service to the people we were called to serve.

We had our individual roles, these acted, however, as points on which we could support each other. It was a huge honour being a part of a group that was so good at what it did. Not only that, but the camaraderie was superb. Some of my greatest memories are linked to that time together.

That as well as other snippets and insights informs my love of group work. It’s ironic that as a loner I should be such a fan of it, but as a relational, social being who realises I can only be fully me in relation to others, this is the best opportunity to show it.
