This will probably be one of a series of blogs on the importance of friendships in shaping character, perspectives and the like.
The whole thing came about following a conversation I had with someone I know. He is certainly a brother in Christ, but h:-) e is not someone I would class as a close friend. In any case, I know of him and he knows of me (yes, he needs your prayers for that reason). We struck up a conversation and the brother shared some profound things regarding his spiritual journey to date. I was refreshed and fascinated by his candour in sharing. A lot of it touched on things I could relate to at a deep level.
Aspects of what he said made him a freak in the Christian circles in which we navigate. I love freaks … in the sense of disciples who follow Jesus in faithful paths that are not always recognised by traditional church. I love them because like some of the less conventional characters in the Bible, they have a lot to show in terms of where God’s heart lies in reaching others.
In any case, I considered what it would be like to be this guy’s friend – as in close friend. What would it be like to have a traditional faith challenged by the prophetic insights your friend offers?
My journey in faith is dotted with key figures whose example challenged what I thought I knew about God, Jesus, the Bible, the church and the world. These figures I think are crucial to never having a complacent faith. How they do this is an adventure worth exploring,
That may happen in blog entries to come. For the time being, thank God for friends and the capacity to learn about God through them.
