Finding Sufficiency In Inadequacy

Feeling like you’ve got it all in control is a remarkable feeling.

It’s the sort of feeling that allows you to go on holiday with greatly reduced stress. It’s the sort of feeling that allows you to go shopping without being concerned as to whether or not you’ll not have enough to cover it. It’s the sort of feeling that allows you to do many things hassle-free.

So it’s only fitting that a lot of life by faith is not feeling as though you’re in control. Indeed there’s something about the certainty that some have when it comes to faith that can be somewhat disturbing. Following Jesus is not about knowing all the steps in the journey. When Jesus tells Paul the things he’ll suffer, it does not mean that Paul has everything in control. Some of his letters go to great lengths to show just how much he was not in control and had to depend on God to make it through.

There is something about the walk with Christ that highlights vulnerabilities and inadequacies. It’s not done for shame or embarrassment at all. In Him shame and guilt goes. Primarily because now we find our identity in Him. He shows us ourselves to let us know just what His grace covers and how we can live free in Him. The ‘in Him’ bit though is critical. For in Him we can do all the things He calls us to do, even if it’s venturing in unknown areas. We can do it, because we can trust Him.

That walk really does involve trusting Him even when I don’t feel adequate. What He teaches me is that it is all about His sufficiency. It is not what I have in myself, it is what I have in Him. When I discover all I ever need I have in Him, then I don’t have to depend on myself.  That makes my inadequacy no longer an issue.  His sufficiency covers all.

That is reassuring for those tough times when others question it. It is not always about certainty, but it is about freedom in security.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
