There are some people who are absolutely obsessed with studying end times.
They read scriptures and make the most seemingly obscure and tenuous connections to establish huge constructs of blow by blow action of how and when things will reach its climax. I come across some whose obsession with it is rather creepy. They are convinced that certain political developments mean that the end will happen next year at a certain month in a certain way.
What’s intriguing about the obsessive is their failure to consider Jesus’ words on the matter, especially the sort of people we should be in the light of His return. It’s as of Jesus gave commentary for speculation, but no instruction as to how we behave.
Jesus, however, is not neglectful of our conduct. On the contrary, He expects us to be alert, be faithful and be diligent in doing good in relationships. It is precisely because we have no exact date to be working with, whatever the obsessives suggest, that we behave as though it could be any day.
As it could be any day, our conduct should not be star gazing whilst our neighbours suffer. It should be showing heavenly values in loving the neighbours.
Jesus won’t be rewarding those who ‘got it right’ according to their random scripture speculation. He rewards those who in the light of His return behave faithfully and with due vigilance.
That in itself should be enough to keep our eyes on Jesus as His Kingdom comes.
