Substantial

I am a fussy eater. I really am.

The question is not so much what don’t I eat, it’s what do I eat. I can be awkward like that.

I love eating though. I am a big fan of it. One thing I’m fairly keen on, is having a good hearty meal. Eating, pushing the empty plate to the side, giving the sigh of satisfaction, grinning contentedly, sipping the drink knowing full well you will not need to have to eat again for a while because that meal was substantial.

What made it so filling was the variety and sufficient quantity of it to make a really scrumptious experience. I look at some of the culinary dishes that famous chefs prepare in famous restaurants at famous prices and decry the pitiful amount in the plate. I’m not endorsing gluttony, I am saying some people’s idea of a meal lacks substance.

Some conversations can be like that. Some gatherings can be like that too. I believe some of us have taken the little given as if that’s all there is to faith life. One guy pulls the strings. We hear that guy. We take it and wait til the following week to get more of the buzz that is criminally shallow.

Imagine if we all put our ingredients into the mix. Imagine if someone shared their experience, someone else shared a song, yet another presented a teaching and someone else shared some message for the gathering to keep ir on track. Just think how much more substantial an experience that would be.

Maybe we wouldn’t just leave with a mildly satiated thrill from a sermon. Maybe the whole affair would satisfy hunger today whilst giving a desire to.live out more of the truth in every day life.

It is only when we consider the substantial that everyone and every opportunity can be maximised and we can be about the business God assigns us.
