Apparently the British are not all that patriotic,
My resident expert pointed out that when he was in Canada, he could tell quite clearly that these people were passionate about their country through the flags displayed virtually everywhere. Journeying south to the USA, my expert knew immediately from again the flags and other material that let him know this was a whole new ball game. Whereas it’s not as prominent in this country.
Of course patriotism in Britain is not dying out at all. The sense of pride in national identity is a major factor for many in this country. Indeed so strong is the link for some that there is a hankering for the Empire days or at least that feeling of greatness that came with the whole ‘sun never sets …’ perspective.
National and cultural identity can be deeply engrained in the psyche and embedded in the communal experience. Its effect can bring people together. It can also have a highly exclusive feel to it as if clearly marking the boundaries between the privileged and impoverished.
In fact, so deeply entrenched can these allegiances be, that it can actively work against the efforts being made to bridge gaps.
Those claiming allegiance include family, employment and particularly church. Such can be the suffocating demands, that we lose sight of what really matters.
On his return, Jesus won’t be looking for slavish adherents to church doctrinal statements. He won’t be looking for massive denominational supporters. He will simply be looking for those who have lived a fruitful life based on quality time knowing Him in spirit and truth.
Calling Him Lord means all deeds and titles all derive from Him. It it means devotion belongs too. As well as that, there are some important proclamations that can make the difference – which necessitates radical change.
What happened to you to get you to relinquish everything for the overriding kingship of God?
For His Name’s Sake
