September Sojourn: What Manner Of Love Is This?

I am amazed by the love the Son has for the Father.  I am amazed by the love the Father has for the Son.

I am captured by the love of the Son for the Father.  A love that saw Him voluntarily left His position in glory to take on humanity.  A love that looked to search for those who were lost and broken, and proclaim and display the Kingdom of peace and righteousness.  A love that sought to only reflect the very heartbeat of the Creator for His creation.

A heartbeat that throbbed His very essence of pure and holy love.  Such love that even allowed Himself to suffer, bleed and die and become sin for all humanity so that the partition could be destroyed and humanity and God could once more relate as they were always intended.

I am captured by the love of the Father for the Son. A love that chose His Son to be the centre and conduit of all the brilliance of creation.  A love that took pleasure in glorifying His Son  through all created order.  A love that delighted in creating all there is in the universe and establishing His Son as the first of a family of those that would be His children joining in the eternal love. A love that conquered sin and death by raising His Son from the grave.

A love that never gave up on His creation despite its rebellion and corruption.  A love that restores and redeems.  A love so thrilled with His Son that He has prepared a Bride for Him to enjoy for all eternity. A love expressed in a plan set from eternity past, rolling thorugh to eternity to come and still capturing elements of the temporal experience of now to point to His glorious plan and His amazing love.

This love is too amazing for words, and what is all the more incredible is that in the midst of this sin-sick world with misery and depravity apparently abounding, and injustice and dysfunction so rife, this amazing love should still look to make its home in my heart.  This amazing love should make its home of those who believe in the Son for the glory of the Father.

That amazing love should transform strangers and enemies into brothers and sisters. That amazing love can make Arabs and Jews, blacks and whites sit, eat, live and serve together and rejoice in their identity as sons of the Father.  That amazing love can make the poor richer than a multi-billionaire because of their Father.

That amazing love that heals the broke-hearted and sets captives free.  That amazing love that makes the blind to see, and the deaf to hear.  That amazing love that restores broken relationships between mothers and sons, daughters and fathers.  That amazing love that is a shadow of what we are to experience when the Son returns for the glory of the Father.

What manner of love is this? An amazing love that propels me to serve my community as the Son of Man came to serve and not be served. An amazing love that compels me to honour my parents as the Son honours His Father. An amazing love that drives me to support my siblings even as the Messiah looks out for His brothers.  An amazing love that cherishes my wife as the most beautiful woman on earth even as the Son cherishes His beautiful Bride. An amazing love that motivates my responsible parenting to such wonderful offspring even as the Father leads His dear children along.

An amazing love that finds its place returning thanks to God that in His mercy and kindness He should breathe on me and turn this dead man to life in all its fullness.

Oh for the world to see, hear, smell, taste, touch and sense this love and to never be the same again.

All because the Son loves the Father, and the Father loves the Son.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom

C. L. J. Dryden
