Where Real Authority Originates

Not long ago I wrote something in praise of teams, and after that Chris Jefferies from Journeys of Heart and Mind left a brilliant comment at the end of which was this pivotal line.

Ultimate authority is not in havng absolute power but in knowing the Author.

This is seen in the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ.  Here was one who made outrageous (and true) claims to be son of divinity, yet exercised His authority in the teachings He gave and the good works He did on His relationship with the Father.  Not only that, but this knowledge lead Him to exhibit the authority in meekness and humility.

It’s sad to see some of us even in Christian circles missing that point.  It’s sad to see debates on leadership based on titles, hierarchy and contrived ‘orders’ seeking to imbue individuals with inflated views of themselves and their powers.  That is evident in families, churches, businesses, communities and dare I even mention political offices.

It need not be the case.  The communal journey in knowing Christ that can inform the individual journey in growing in Christ can enable leaders to acknowledge their responsibility because of who they know and the lives they lead as a result.

You might think I’m talking pure theory, but I have had occasion to experience expressions of leadership living these values out.  These experiences were all the more remarkable because they were conducted in contexts of systems that reinforced hierarchical and selfish ‘lording it over’ styles of leadership.

That is to say these experiences were counter-cultural.  These examples bucked the trend without being antagonistic in defying the order around them.  It is as if it were an invitation to the unhelpful order to subvert itself to breathe new life.

I know I was immensely enriched for these experiences, because I was not just cattle to be prodded about to ‘follow the leader’.  Rather, I was considered to be a vlaued part of the movement we made together, even without being called leader.  Not just me, but all those in the group.

This just went to highlight again how simple and effective leadership is if it’s based on growing in knowing Jesus.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
