Thinking Things Through

Permit me a football reference just at the beginning of this entry.

Thank you.

Rafa Benitez was appointed the new manager of Chelsea on Wednesday (if like me, you enjoy football, you can read more about it here).  He had a press conference yesterday.

I find press conferences fascinating.  It is not an interview.  A number of people have their microphones, lights, cameras and questions at one person mainly.  As it is a number of people asking questions, you can expect there to be a variety of questions.  One thing I noted in the Benitez press conference, that has been a common theme in a lot of the press conferences I’ve seen is just how … dumb the questions appear.  It is worse if people repeat the same question in different words.  It is almost as though they have not thought through their questions.

When I watch these I have a great deal of respect for the patience and restraint the person at the centre shows to this kind of fiasco.  I can appreciate that when your job is to actually DO something, rather than answer inane questions from people who have not thought things through, it can be easy to be curt, abrupt and lacking in co-operation.  Yet you listen carefully and pay it considerable attention and answer it to the best of your ability knowing that a false step might unleash a media storm.

Life is a bit like that.

It is in the sense that often some of the things that bombards your mind and your time, both within and without can appear absolutely ridiculous.  Yet just because things appear ridiculous and lacking in thought, it is no reason for us to react in like manner.  Bad steps could lead to unpleasant consequences.

It is still important to think things through and give things the consideration they deserve so as to respond in the appropriate fashion.  Proverbs informs us within verses of each other not to answer and fool, and then to answer a fool.  Why?  Because there are times where it’s necessary to do one and there are times when where it is necessary to do the other.  In life it remains vital in the situations of life to think things through.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
