Manchester United were playing Aston Villa this evening at Villa Park.
(Don’t worry, this isn’t a football blog entry, there is a reason for this intro.)
United are top of the table and looked favourites to get the win. Villa haven’t had a good season, but the home advantage and a very sluggish start from Villa gave them hope. They ran into a two goal lead and after 50 mins they were in a promising position.
United made a substitution at half-time. The player helped to turn the game around and scored twice whilst getting the shot off that lead to the own goal that gave United a big win.
Afterwards the match-winner said that it didn’t matter who scored the goals as long as United stayed on top of the league and were winning games.
The player displayed a passion to play for the team and ensure that he contributed to the team winning and afterwards it was not about personal glory but team progress.
I wonder what would happen if followers of Christ had a similar attitude to life as church?
Would the Pastor be seen as the main man if that was the case? Would we make celebrities out of singers if that was the case? Would those who have speaking/teaching gifts be given such adulation and prominence, if that was the case? Would we structure our gatherings around a central human figure logistically if that was the case?
If it doesn’t matter who gets the credit as long as God gets the glory, how would our lives change?
For His Name’s Sake
Shalom
