I am employed as a tutor. I work with adults who have been unemployed for over 6 months. The idea is to refresh, revise and reinvigorate the learners about jobsearch skills. The challenge is that by the time they reach the short course I deliver, some of them are well entrenched on a cycle of despondency and defeat.
Reflecting on these challenges got me thinking about what is meant by the concept teaching. After all people are learning through various means all the time. Where before my idea was very much determined by a typical classroom setting with the teacher at the front dispersing knowledge knuggets for the waiting learner to digest, now my viewer is a bit bigger. It is no longer so much the teacher being the source of the knowledge knuggets, but rather being the facilitator to allow learners to discover and display the knowledge knuggets for themselves and apply them appropriately.
Especially with Jesus as the Teacher, our role is to point out the paths and remove obstacles for followers to walk where Jesus leads.
It does not mean the teacher is not informed and seeks to grow in knowledge. It is to say that this knowledge would propel us more into incarnational teaching. Here it is about walking with me, seeing what I do and conversing as I do it, before doing it yourself and constructively reflecting on the matter.
For His Name’s Sake
Shalom
