Blessed Are The Peacemakers: Doctors and Nurses

I thank God for peacemakers and I think they take on shapes, forms and professions.

I was thinking about the point of doctors and nurses (representing the entirety of the medical profession).  I think it’s a natural off-shoot of placing business concerns on the medical profession that the ethos of professions like being a doctor or a nurse can be compromised.  Yet on a whole when I consider what these people are all about, to me, they really epitomise the heart of peacemakers. After all when the mind or the body is not at peace, when it is wrecked or damaged either in a minor or major way, it is these people tat we call on to bring peace to the body.

Some can have negative views about the medical profession as a whole and see it as a bid to do what God should do.  This can lead to a wary and hostile approach to medication and the like.  I am actually more of the mind to see God using these professions and developments as an outworking of His healing power.  Sure there’s always room for the miraculous, but I’m sure God doesn’t limit Himself to the miraculous.  As an asthmatic, I’m particularly grateful for the medical industry for creating controlling medication such as the inhalers that have helped me not to die.  (I have a preference to live in these kind of situations.)

I reflect on the great work of care that doctors and nurses can give not just in the medical treatment but in the traditional element of pastoral care given to the sick and suffering.  Those unsung heroes deserve great credit who have invested time in ensuring the patients know they are cared for even if its through the very painful last days of their lives.  Their efforts have truly made peace where it was only too evident that the broken and shattered.

God bless those in the area who make peace for the body and mind.  May God grant us the opportunity to give thanks to doctors and nurses and despite the competing forces, please God let more doctors and nurses emerge who wish to see peace in the body and mind so that individuals become fit and capable of making peace in society.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
