Some songs I remember because they remind me of growing up. This is one of those songs. Yes it was sung in the local church, but more importantly I remember both my parents singing it with a passion and a reality that still chokes me up today.
What my Mum and my Dad took as crucial for them in walking with Jesus is something that has a special place in the heart of their son. Each one of the lines of the song has a heavy meaning for me, and the sense of complete reliance on Jesus, reminds me again of the way in which, whether I acknowledged it or not, those initial years on the planet left me completely in trust to my parents to provide everything from material basics like food and clothing, to the essential aspects of life – love, respect, trust and compassion.
I listen to this song and think of my parents. I sing the song and think of Jesus, the one who has taken the place of my parents. I embrace the song and think of my Heavenly Father who has a home prepared for all those who love Him.
Just as He has made a home in our hearts, so I look forward to home being in His heart for all eternity. It doesn’t look so encouraging a lot of the time, but the God who keeps His promises remains faithful even when I am faithless and with that reality in mind I walk on.
As I walk there is that blessed assurance that as with my beloved Mum and Dad, each step I take leads me closer home.
For His Name’s Sake
Shalom
