Almost 15 years ago whilst at university I chose as an optional module to study sociology. As I was majoring in Philosophy and Politics the overlaps appeared natural to me in terms of sociological studies that supported certain political situations and the philosophical values that underpinned both the sociological method and it’s political implications.
One of the issues that came up, which continues to headline news especially in the light of tragic current events is the link between screen violence and its impact on society. There are plenty of those in the creative arts would seek to minimise any such correlation. They see art more as holding up a mirror to society, rather than inviting society to mimic what is seen.
Of course there are those who would argue the reverse and suggest that the amount of violence and the nature of its portrayal from cartoon violence to the graphic content of certain video games can have a significant impact on those who take it in. They would suggest producers of such material responsible for the level of violence in society and suggest that if we don’t enforce strict censorship on it then it could continue to spiral out of control and lead to dire consequences.
Your take on such a connection will depend on your worldview (from pacifist to endorsing millitary campaigns that establish order), Is it a case of more controls and regulations monitoring the content? What educational steps can parents and their community take to ensure children have a proper assessment of violence and its role in society? It’s a talking point.
