Jesus indeed is the best friend a man can ever have and I really appreciate the time He gives me. There truly is no other than him in all the earth.
He, however, is only too aware that what made His time with His disciples so special was that they were with Him, He was with them and they were with each other. Now we prove we’re with Him by the way we are with each other.
Friendships here on earth come in different forms and come for different seasons. Some friendships I’ve had have been intense for a few years and have lapsed into nothing. It’s sad at times thinking of what it was and what it is, but I’m often reminded to get over it and crack on, because such things are the marks of life. At present there is a brother in Christ who is very busy himself with various other aspects of ministry for Christ. In all that, he still makes the time to spend with me. It is a tremendous privilege on my part to be able to call him a friend and share aspects of life with him.
It is not a one way relationship. I appreciate his openness in talking about his gripes and his passions. He doesn’t have to be that way, but I find it makes the relationship wotk better and there’s more of a chance of me being open, if the other side is open. There is an air in which the trust we have is such that there’s no question of asking for confidence on issues. That is refreshing. I am grateful for this friendship and I’m also grateful it’s not the only one of its kind that I have. I can say it is these kind of relationships that help in my relationship with God and gets closer to what I believe living in the Kingdom and being church is all about.
It frustrated me being in settings that seemed to ignore this in favour of a pattern of consumer christianity or church as a spectator sport or worse still church as a coffee club (no offence against coffee drinkers, I’m sure God can still cleanse and make you whole). It frustrated me, until I relaxed and learnt that this is not about railing against systems and traditions or cultures and customs. Rather it is about seeing and making the most of opportunities within any setting to share Christ and allow what He has to offer to impact our lives and relationships.
My prayer continues to be to engage this level and a deeper level of fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ to spur each other to good works and understand and pursue the will of God in our lives and our communities.
For His Name’s Sake
Shalom
