Once again I come across one of those hymns that I enjoyed even when I didn’t have a clue what I was singing. There’s only a slight difference in how it was sung at the church that I grew up in, and this version. Minor detail, really. I could detect the yearning in the song just by how it sounded even without understanding the lyrics.
I grew up and ‘made a decision’ to follow Jesus and slowly but surely the meaning of the words became clearer to me. As I looked in my own life and the gracious Spirit of God highlighted things for my attention it became more apparent that the writer of this song knew what it was to urgently ask of god for that which would make him clean and pure.
There’s a lot to be said about the pursuit of purity. A lot indeed, and the concept of being whiter than the snow shows what cleansing work the blood shed at Calvary does for us as we embrace the truth of the work done by Christ and our position in God’s eyes. A lot that could be said, which I hope to contribute to in time on this here blog.
In the meantime, thanks to the blogger at Hymns With A Message for having such an awesome blog in the first place. Also thanks for the history lesson you get both from there and the Scriptures and Music site. Major thanks go to the hombres at CyberHymnal who gave all the lyrics that written for the song some of which I had never seen before and on reading it makes the song that was already great, even better.
For His Name’s Sake
Shalom
