One of the reasons for the concept of rest is that we can be insatiably restless people. Some exhibit that more obviously with a pressing desire to be doing something and never able to stay still. Fidgeting comes naturally to them and they are never more alive than when they are busy, busy, busy.
The people to look out for, however, are those who appear chilled-out and laid back. To all external appearances they must have the rest thing down to a tee, but I can attest through observation that this is a mirage. Beneath the cool, calm and composed character lies a furiously active mind working hard to maintain the façade of control. When the routine is broken, when the control is taken, when their environment is rocked the true nature of their composure emerges.
So whether the fidget or the cool dude there is something of the restless in people. Indeed unlike some soap opera somewhere you don’t have to be young to be restless.
Now when that energy of restlessness is channelled positively there is little to be concerned about. That is because, however, true positive channelling of restlessness is God-wards and He offers true rest. True contentment. The sort of contentment that allows the Messiah to take a kip in a boat that is on the verge of being shipwrecked, the sort of rest that allows the Messiah to be brutally taken by soldiers despite the efforts of some of his follows and face what He has been born to do.
Not that I’m suggesting for a moment that rest is easy. It is not. It is essential for our rest is meant to be found in Him and as long as we are without Him we will never find that rest. The benefit of being found in Him, should release that level of rest whatever the occasion that is right for the time and fit for the purpose of centring us once more on the main thing. The main One.
I like to celebrate the day of rest, yet it in itself is a celebration of the larger deal of the rest God calls us to and the anticipation of the rest to come.
