Today my family and I had the incredible honour of attending the engagement service of a precious family friend. The nature of the service included songs, prayers and encouraging words for the couple.
While this was taking place it afforded me the time to consider carefully again the whole deal about marriage. Whilst pondering that I came across the concept that forms the blog title. My mentor was one of the speakers and mentioned how difficult marriage can be in the opening stages as the couple cannot afford to hide from each other. This entails then a level of openness, transparency and vulnerability at levels before experienced. This for a purpose – and that purpose is intimacy.
I don’t believe God wears clothes. By that I’m not making a glib and specious reference as though God is the first member of the original nudist colony. I mean that our relationship with God starts by acknowledging who He is and who he is may be beyond our comprehension – yet there is the element that the Great I Am is – as in no barriers, no aspects that are covered because shame or fear – His manifest glory is literally that – manifest. Plain for those with the eyes and the heart to witness to take it on board. The sin problem has clouded our eyes, so our relationship with Him becomes one of revelation – He allows us to see what has always been there. Life then is the ongoing discovery of seeing and knowing Him for who He is. The more we know at that deepest level and the more committed we are to knowing and the more joy in knowing the greater the intimacy.
This is the well from which true love springs. Nowhere is that love presented in human relationships than in marriage. It is almost a microcosm of the knowing between christ and his bride the church. It in istself, however, is the same commitment between a man and a woman to grow in knowing each other at the deepest level possible, calling for the greatest investment and taking in everything. That is why marriage is so costly, that is why it calls for such great feats of selflessness. That is why it holds the greatest joys to be known in the human experience and is the foundation for offspring to learn the basics of love and practice it.
