What To Learn From The Old Testament

Jesus lovers.  That’s what we are.  We love Him.  We love Him because He first loved us and has now given us power to really love that we didn’t know was possible, but He’s made it possible.  Through this love He allows us to see who God is, who we are and who we can be through Him.  We also see that He is present in scripture both the New and Old Testament.

Understandably as a result of that we are encouraged to read the Old Testament in the search for Jesus – after all the Messiah Himself said that all the Law and Prophets were referring to Him.

Amen – and Amen.

My beloved wife and I were watching the Cecil B. DeMille biblical epic Samson and Delilah recently.  What I love about watching films with me wife is that she gets involved in them, she draws out some of the issues, personalises and applies them and gets me conversing with her on those topics so that before I know it, a little scene becomes a huge debate about God, the Universe and Everything.

Gotta be honest with you, I laughed for quite a while through the movie.  I had to, some of the acting wasn’t so much lame as in a position where only the power of Jesus could get it to walk again.

Through it all though, however, I was reminded that in as much as Jesus is to be seen in the OT – He reveals crucial life lessons that we can either learn now, or learn the hard way through experience.  The reason why there are so many biblical epics that can be made is because the scriptures are rich literary material – the wisdom of it though is to look at those stories and through that same power that rose Jesus from the dead discern how now should we live in the light of what He’s revealed to us.  Not just glib discussions that are good at perking the ears in the same way as a soap storyline, but the rich and deep river of life that awaits us as we choose to dive in the deep end.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
