It was a good morning. I was listening to a selection of songs as sung by Steve Green that I’d saved on me phone. Great songs like “God and God Alone”, “Kings Shall Bow”, “The Mission”, “People Need The Lord” and “I Will Serve The Lord”. The one song I didn’t have on me phone which is one of my favourite songs of all time, let alone from Steve Green is “We Believe”. I sang it to myself as I strolled to the bus stop for my trip to work.
Reminding myself of the lyrical content I was moved to praise again about the best news I’ve ever heard. We believe our Lord shall come as He said. The land and the seas shall give up their dead. His children shall reign with Him as their head – we believe. We believe.
That means in the midst of riots, economic crises, social unrest, political upheaval, emotional distress, mental turmoil, physical depression and spiritual malaise, the believer has a hope. This hope is not just about flinging ourselves to what will be. This hope is a future reality that determines present behaviour. We get to practice that now in finite capacity. We who hope in the merciful, forgiving One, get to show mercy and forgive others even as we have been forgiven. We get to show love and compassion becuase we are beneficiaries of great love and compassion. We make a stand for righteousness and justice because we see these as the hallmarks of the one we believe will return just like He said He would.
It was while I celebrated this that a sober reminder was given of God’s explicit warning. If I know to do good and do not do it – to me it is a sin.
That means there’s no point seeking a list of rules and regultions. That means it’s no good seeking solace in ignroance or in excuses. The Good news written and expressed leads to a love impressed on the heart that makes it clear what is expected of a child of God. Rather than being concerned by what others are doing, I should be more concerned about I am doing and am not doing.
There is no point having great songs of a generous, merciful, compassionate, righteous Saviour if I know the right and do not do it. As the concept of sin suggests, I would have missed the mark. With His return being the grand highlight of eternity in history, I do not want to miss that point. I don’t want you to miss that point either. With what you know to be right, be up and doing it!
For His Name’s Sake
Shalom
