Family Fings: Deborah’s Diligence

I am often caught up with myself and forget to be grateful for what appears minor but is actually a major part of growing in Christ. God graciously shows that in the context of my immediate family life.

My first born daughter is 6 years old. It is apparent that her gifting lies in vocal expression. She talks. And talks often. And can talk about seeming random subjects with vigour and passion. The outstanding thing about her though is her diligence when she gets into something. This has been a testimony to me of late. I’ve noticed that every day as I come home from work she and her sister Abigail will run up and greet me by reminding me of our relational connection – “Daddy!!” Abigail will then resume her activities and Deborah will almost without fail enquire as to how my day was. Not in a glib passive way, but genuinely wanting to know if it was good or not. Sometimes the tired carcass that I am after work merely wants to fob her off with the typical ‘it was alright’. God, however, challenges me to share life with her – just as He shares life with me – what His plans and desires are through His Word, His Spirit, His people.

Deborah’s diligence in these enquiries is touching. It moves me to want to be a lot more concerned with how people are doing. It warms my heart and reminds me that Church life as family life is about being real with each other going beyond superficial interest to a heart to heart sharing of the ups and downs of real life.

I am grateful to God for these family fings as I remain grateful to God for my firstborn Deborah Dryden.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
