Sometimes life as a Christian can be performance-based. Especially in the type of churches that recognise a need to be more lively and participatory there can almost be schizophrenic approach to faith. I know because it’s a struggle I went through especially during my years at university. There are the things to be said and done in church services and there can be a legitimate fervour in that environment for the things of God. Then the music stops, people go home and for the days in the week things revert to a norm that is no different to the rest of the world.
Piper outlines what he sees as this Achilles Heel tendency that can afflict this generation of those eager for Bible truths but don’t apply it to daily living. That’s the whole transformational point of the gospel – it affects every day living, if it doesn’t then a question can be asked as to what is the point of all those Bible truths?
