Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. (Proverbs 31:30)
The purpose of Proverbs is for readers to recognise what it takes to be and speak wise and thus aspire to wisdom above everything. Throughout the book it has not been an exercise of the head, but a commitment on the whole being to commit to the foundation of wisdom – a reverential respect for the Creator. For all the virtues of the woman outlined by the mother of Lemuel, the one that is the basis for them all is her fear of God. May that not just be a virtue of women, but all who wish to live wisely.
