Are You Free?

Recently I celebrated five years of blogging. In as much as I enjoy reading and writing, it takes certain things to get me to review what I’ve written.

When it comes to the topic of freedom I was surprised to see how much I had written on the topic of freedom. Not too long from now I hope to indicate a section where you can read the material on freedom.

So when I blogged about Jesus The Liberator this morning, it touched on a theme that has been of great importance to me. A good question, would be, why? Why bang on so much about freedom?

I’m concerned that things are taken for granted. I’m concerned that it’s easy to follow a line and believe it to be true, when reality suggests otherwise.

I grew up in church where one of the choruses sung was I Am Free with the lyrics that went as follows

I am free, praise the Lord I am free

No longer bound, no more chains holding me

My soul is resting,

It’s such a blessing

Praise the Lord, hallelujah

I am free

Yet whilst singing that very same song there were people still very much struggling in the chains of their internal issues. People who were chained up in bitterness unable to get rid of a negative, cynical attitude in response to what happened to them in life. That was just one of the other chains that were holding down those who were singing of the freedom that allows their ‘soul to be resting’.

For years I was enslaved – and I was a church boy – brought up in church, always done the church thing, did the baptism thing, went through the drill with learning the key doctrines and playing the church game and going through the meeting routines, and still very much trapped in my issues.

The desire of Jesus to set people free from all manner of destructive and oppressive chains is such that He lay down His life. Not for superficial happy-clappy sentiments, but for genuine life-changing liberation.

Having experienced some of that liberation and knowing what it does to life and perspectives on it and how refreshing it becomes from day to day as I engage with God on it this is something that is a passion of mine. I want people to experience that freedom – not to do what you want, but to become what God created you to be. For your desires to be changed into His and for your life to become His and as fulfilling and enriching as His.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
