And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. (Colossians 1:18)
Israel as God’s chosen people rejected God as their head when they petitioned for a king to be like their neighbours. Unsurprisingly, since Jesus ascended, there appears to be similar dissatisfaction among some as to who should be in charge of the church.
Many refer to people with different titles as the ones in charge – the minister, the senior pastor, the bishop, the presiding officer, the archbishop. Though still searching for that figurehead to rule instead of Jesus, God remains clear that no one can ever claim to be in charge other than the Head.
