Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. (Hebrews 2:17)
We could not approach God.
We needed a representative, someone through whom our obligations could be met. Even this middle man, however, had to be right with God. This representative had to be presentable to God. Who could ever fit that bill?
Therein is the wondrous grace of God revealed in Jesus Christ, for in Him we have the ideal representative. He is the perfect embodiment of one who could represent us because He’s lived like us, and yet is pure to God.
Now we can approach God and need no other representative for Jesus Christ by Himself is sufficient.
