War – What Is It Good For?

So following the article on Thursday and my thoughts on that there were the services going on today.  My friend Rob Simmonite also had this to blog on the situation.  On the one hand it’s a time to be grateful for the sacrifices of those brave officers etc.  It’s also, however, a chance to consider the thorny question of Christian participation in war.  We never discussed this in great detail in church until last year when we covered some of the basic doctrine.  Bizarre really when you consider the skirmishes that have occurred over the last ten years.  The ‘doctrinal’ position is virtually pacifist.  It does not advocate the involvement of believers in active warfare, i.e. involvement in the armed services, etc.  It’s an interesting position to take and I reckon by personality I’m more disposed to a non-violent position.  So that makes our consideration of days like today all the more interesting.

Rather than get into the nitty-gritty of the matter, I like the contrasting positions these two videos take and will leave it once more to others to think it through.  I may even share my own growth in views as time goes by.  For the time being I will say that I tend to agree with what Paul had to say about the real warfare which is basically that it’s one that does not require man-made resolutions and needs supernatural tools.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
