Like The Winans, The Clark Sisters are a group that is often highlighted as the standard of great gospel music. For their time they were ground-breaking and there are many artists and singers who have been inspired by their harmonies, great vocals and crucially their great songs. They were among the artists in my mother’s tape collection, I just didn’t know their names at the time, just their music and I loved what I heard.
This was one of the tunes I heard (albeit the album version which had more verses and went up an octave). Listening back to it again the sentiments are interesting. Again like The Winans’ standard track ‘Question Is …’ there is something about a song performed a generation ago that you hear the lyrics are still applicable. If anything circumstances have not improved at all. America still needs to get back to its knees now more than ever before. Where the sentiment gets interesting for me, though, is that I believe it’s never a matter of what a country does. The USA is as Christian a nation as Iraq (I await the abuse). By that I mean, there is no such thing as a Christian nation and the irony of a nation that recently celebrated its independence birthed out of rebellion and disrespect for the rule over them contravening NT principles and also some of the deistic background of the Founding Fathers puts paid to a lot of the claims of it being a Christian country however much their dollar bills suggest that it’s in God they trust.
That, however, doesn’t negate from the importance of praying for the country. Prayer can change things at least in terms of the influence on the key decision-makers and the message that comes from the country. Even if God won’t necessarily come back exclusively for America, in the time that remains before the return those in that huge land mass can be turned onto a real relationship with Jesus, not the culturally compromised package that fits the materialistic pursuits that pervade. Perhaps that way those prayers for the country as well as every other on God’s green earth can be answered.
