Independence is such a vaunted quality in life today and yet the reality is that it’s only by interdependence that any success has ever been achieved. Even those who learn by themselves would not have been as successful in a vacuum and the very tools that help them learn by themselves had to be put there by someone.
It took me to my late 20’s to suss out that independence wasn’t all it was cracked up to be and in fact there was more to be said for interdependence. Like my very existence is a product of interconnected relationships and all that I am is down to that factor.
Yet above, beneath and through it all there is what resonates as the heartbeat of this song. The greatest joke of the ‘independence’ jive is that we would not be here if it wasn’t for God – we need Him, we depend on Him, we make no progress without Him, we are nothing without Him – so much for independence!
