As I said, it’s all in the timing which can be reached by building momentum.
I said it and I meant it, I can see life through that prism and it works for me. Developing on that, though, I came across the familiar passage of scripture that preoccupied my thoughts for the majority of last year, namely Psalm 1:3, particularly the concept of being planted and the location of that plant. The positioning matters.
It was because of the positioning why we moved in the first place. Sometimes we can stay in the same position too long and not realise that this is no longer the place to be planted to be nourished by the streams of living water. There are times that you get too comfortable in a routine and a trend that you miss the point of why you are there in the first place. I am only too aware that I am a creature of comforts. I like routines and knowing what’s what. The problem comes when these patterns don’t gall in line with what God is looking for from us. Growth equals change. Development equals difference. So it’s back to the momentum thing that I was referring to last time where it’s not just sustaining momentum, but about adjusting the pace to do that. Adjustment is about new positions to deal with new challenges with the new momentum.
Sadly in growing up when I came across positions it was mostly about the hierarchy and how far up you could go, what could you achieve, etc. It reminds me of the whole church hierarchy deal where everyone was looking at positions in terms of titles. Not even realising that the only positions that mattered was the position in the Body. That’s not about titles, that’s about defining active words that declare your position at that particular time in that particular place. It’s not always the same, just like I don’t believe you’re an elder or a deacon or ‘missionary’ for life. Though there’s little room for this thinking because it upsets the apple cart of the titles hierarchy and the grasping for power as perceived in that position.
The real deal as I understand it in the light of the way up being the way down is that generous, loving competitive spirit of how we can outdo each other in love, service and submission. That’s lowerarchy rather than hierarchy. That’s seeing others as more important than ourselves. So with each development and new position it’s an opportunity to be of service to brothers and sisters. That as I read it, live it and witness it and experience it is kingdom living at its best. That’s dynamic, engaging, interactive serving, living and loving in a way that’s not about title, age, education or other entitlements that apparently makes someone important. This is about seeing each other as Jesus sees us and serving in the light of that.
Yet as with football if you’re not in the right position then you can be a weak point in the team, your performance will be affected and the possibility of contributing to winning goals is severely restricted. I appreciate now more than ever that this life business is a team activity. It’s about recognising our various positions, how we’re doing in them and encouraging each other to continue doing our best where we are especially in realising there’s none better than another. It’s not about having star players in a team, it’s about playing as a team, being flexible to the needs of others and as such once more the total is greater than the sum of its parts.
It’s good from time to just check what position you are in and seeing if the positioning thing needs to be addressed, whether that’s socially, physically, mentally or spiritually.
In as much as it’s all in the timing though, your position matters.
For His Name’s Sake
Shalom
