Ancient of Days – Ron Kenoly

I did the search.  Honest I did.  I was very thorough with the search as well, covered all the bases and you know what, if the search device is to be believed in the 900+ posts on this here blog there is not one entry from Ron Kenoly.  If you know why that is, you win the prize for the Greatest Insight & Discernment.

In my musical upbringing Ron Kenoly played a very crucial part.  He was the crossover between ‘black’ gospel and ‘praise and worship’ music.  So he stood across a number of divides and did a smashing job in that role.  I loved his music in a particular phase of his career which involved the album on which this song is found and a few after that as well.  Probably since 2001 I kinda lost track of his musical movements, but I’ve not lost respect for what he means to my music appreciation and the role ‘praise and worship’ music plays.

You maybe wondering why I put the genre praise and worship in the way I do.  Nothing too long for now, but limiting types of music as various styles of praise and worship is intriguing.  Where I once took it for granted, I’m no longer as comfortable with the classification.  More at another point.

Onto this song, though, one of the beautiful things about songs like this is that when you’re conscious of it there’s not only a driving rhythm, but a definite progression in the intensity of the song, without needing to speed the song up.  By the time we’re singing ‘Your Kingdom shall reign over all the earth – sing unto the Ancient of Days’ for the last time there’s been built a big feel of praise and acclamation.  I still get chills down the spine (in this context linked to an outburst of ecstatic praise) when I hear Ron praising God at the end of the song.

Also acknowledging God as the Ancient of Days is an interesting title to take on board – what it says to me though is that God is eternal, and not only eternal but enduring, faithful, consistent, ever-present, reliable, trustworthy from before time began until after time ends.  Those are qualities in anyone worth embracing and rejoicing.  To find these in the most important relationship in life, though sends the praise through the stratosphere.  Truly His Kingdom shall reign over all the earth and that inevitability and wonderful outcome is good to dwell on and a worthy motivation to sing to the Ancient of Days.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
