Stories for the Journey – Journey for the Stories

I like the terms fiction and non-fiction.  I like the two terms because when I think of the word story, I know people might be prone to think that what they’re about to hear isn’t true and is only told for the moral virtue in the story.  What fiction and non-fiction allow us to remember is that stories are just as much non-fiction as they are fiction and everyone loves a good story.

I think about that in the light of some of the people I serve on a day to day basis who have fascinating stories of their own.  Sometimes these are full of tragedy, sometimes they are full of laughter, sometimes they are intense, sometimes they are jovial, but always when you dig a bit beyond the surface there is something fascinating about the story of their journey of life to this point.

What occurred to me, recently, though, is that I am in the wonderful position of not just hearing these stories but also contributing in my own way in another episode of that story as they make some more progress in life’s journey.  So we have the stories for the journey and with each step the journey produces more stories.  How we learn from other people’s stories and our own can help us make the right steps along our own journey creating good news stories of people making good progress to the place God has prepared for them.

This is why the theme tune to this programme about the Storyteller has been such a significant part of my upbringing for here in the simplicity of what the storyteller has to say is the promise of the happily ever after and despite the tragedies and messes that afflict the pages of the world’s tabloid, followers of Christ are promised that happy ever after for real, if we just hold on and continue to write more good news stories along life’s journey.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
