There’s been a running theme in the recent chapters of Proverbs contrasting the fortunes of those who follow the seductress opposed to those who choose to follow the Wisdom Woman. You can see that contest in the world around us today.
See the tragedy of so many aspiring leaders and innovators who are caught with their trousers down and are fatally flawed as a result. That lack of judgement that ruins their legacy. What’s spouted on the television screens as desirable tends more towards the Foolish Female luring and enticing people to go down the trap-door to Sheol itself. When I read the brochure for Sheol I wasn’t particularly enraptured by the surroundings and content – put it this way even on the worst possible day you wouldn’t want your worse enemy ending up there.
To be fair though, you can understand why so much effort is put in the marketing – it’s like legalistic twisting, you can make a murderer a victim and not liable to proper judicial measures because of the legal technical areas. Likewise it is the work of the foolish woman to be loud and brash and obvious in the wares she’s offering and done in such a way that it’s blatantly open to anyone who takes a closer look that what’s on offer isn’t in our best interests. Yet the truth is that people are suckered into it because of the promise of that which it doesn’t deliver. We’re taken in by the glitz and the sparkle – look at the tree, like our original ancestors, the fruit looks good to eat and it can open our eyes to some new pathways …
The way of wisdom albeit not as crass and blatant in its marketing is far more desirable, has far more substance. Not for her is the way of flirting, teasing and tantalising. No the way for her is that of one who is filled with righteousness through instruction and knowledge based on that ever enduring principle – the fear of God. You don’t need to taunt, when you can invite people to search for themselves and discover the truly unsearchable riches of God.
I don’t find that out for myself often until I find myself lacking with the things of this world – the fleeting pleasures, the shallow wonders, the momentous perks that are over and leave you on a bigger low than you were previously. The way of the Wisdom Woman is not about exposing you to bring your downfall, but to clothe you with aptitudes, qualities and characteristics that can allow you to be strong in the face of so much temptation, to be humble in the face of so much pride, to be meek in the face of so much arrogance and to seek for knowledge and insight in the face of self-absorption and mass-material-consumption.
The cat fight really isn’t a fair definition of that which takes place between the Foolish Female and the Wisdom Woman as wisdom knows only too well that when you leave a fool to their own devices their end is always worse than their beginning. So the real issue is what will we elect to do – follow which one?
