With my departure from the StokeCOGblog there’s been the necessary shifting of gospel music blog posts from there to here. That’s a good thing, because this is a personal site so the entries reflect me personal preference. Also the reality of my upbringing and the way I am is that music plays a crucial part in my life.
This song by Donnie McClurkin when he popped over to these shores around ten years ago now (yeah seriously, that old) was one of my favourites from the album he did whilst he was here. I could get into the nitty-gritty of just how much this stands up to solid biblical teaching. What I’d rather do is point to how the heart of the song as been a tremendous blessing to me over the years. My old mentor used to say it is not failing that makes you a failure, but failing to recover from the failure.
There is a lot of pressure on Christians to live up to a way of behaviour and the level of criticism that is levelled when that standard is not met can be shocking. Yet that key word ‘grace’ comes in again and we see Jesus’ behaviour not condoning sinfulness, but rescuing us from condemnation through a love we don’t deserve giving us the strength we did not have to overcome the sin we could not avoid on our own. It is not unusual for me to be in deep moods of despondency over a situation or my own sins, but the more my eyes stay on Jesus the more I realise that if they stay there I need not stray and even when I do the love is there to make me right, not condemn or neglect me.
That is why this song hold such a special place in my life and that is why I remain ever grateful to God for these helpful contributions on the ongoing project called life. Enjoy.
