What Was Wrong With The Picture Then?

Remember yesterday, right?  I Believe I Can Fly and everything, right.  Now what is wrong with that picture – what on earth would get me spouting on about that?

Sometimes we are told that we can do and be anything we want (almost as though we believe we can fly or something – no I wasn’t taking him literally … well at least not after the sixth time).  In reality we cannot.  Indeed that wouldn’t be for the best really – imagine seriously being what you want or can be.

I can understand this ethos as a backlash against class systems and other restrictive which told you that this where you were in the social strata and there was no room for movement.  I can appreciate that this approach inhibited and crushed a great deal of talent that could have benefited many.

However the ‘be what you want to be’ is not only a non-starter, it actually hides the covetous agenda which wants to get people to release fully their covetous ambitious selves.  Not a pretty picture.  So we’re first told to find out what we’re good at, but that doesn’t necessarily show us what we’re called to be.  Then we’re told to find out what we enjoy doing, but even that ,may not zone in on exactly what we are called to do.

In all of these the focus tends to be on the wrong person to ask – not to say it’s wrong to ask the questions before.  Just to say those conversations work better when they are God-centred – what does He want you to be and how will He reveal His will?  It may involve all that is before and it may not, but if the relationship is all, then discovering where He is and where you should be that will greatly help.  Almost as if rather than believing we can fly, perhaps we should ask Him to lift us up where we belong.

For His Name’s Sake

Shalom
